The Effects of Eating Disorders on Oral Health
Both Bulimia and Anorexia can have a very negative impact on oral health. Bulimia is destructive to oral health, primarily the teeth. Along with the purging (vomiting) associated with Bulimia comes a strong acid that breaks down teeth, specifically tooth enamel. Repeated vomiting can attack tooth enamel enough to make teeth translucent over time. With Anorexia comes a different set of oral health effects, including a diet of poor nutrition, inadequate vitamins and minerals, and self-induced starvation, all of which negatively affect our oral health. Anyone with an eating disorder should consult professional medical or dental advice as soon as possible.
